Carl's Story
August's Coveted Stone: Peridot
Q: Tell us about yourself: Who is Carl and what does he do? And how did you get to where you are now?A: At the core I feel I am a ‘creator.’ I have always been creating, like when I was a kid and stole my sister’s Barbies, styled, and photographed them; or when I peer pressured my high school friends into letting me tease their hair and put acrylic paint on their faces.
It was always an experiment and exploration of new things. I try and keep this same sense of discovery in every medium that I’m working with.
As far as who I am now, I’m working hard every day to figure that out - and loving every second of it.
Q: Peridot is known as a crystal that promotes creativity. How do you access creativity? When do you feel most creatively fulfilled?
A: I almost always have a crystal in my pocket - and what the crystal does for me is bring me back to the present moment. Maybe it’s placebo, but I know it’s a gentle reminder.
I find that I am at my best when I can focus on right now, and what can be created from this single moment in time.
Q: If you could exhibit your work alongside your favourite artist, who would they be?
A : I would love to have my work coupled with Taylor Swift: Red era. Lyrical genius.
Q: Jewelry. How do you feel about it? What is your go to accessory?
A: I feel like I have never been the type of person who can pull off jewelry, I wish I was. I do however admire how it completes a person’s outfit and can change a look so definitively.
My go to accessory is my glasses - it’s mainly for functional reasons. But it does fulfill a part of the transformative jewelry dream.

Q: What are some challenges people might not have realized you faced as you developed your career?
A: I think the biggest challenge is finding information. The freelance world is so difficult to find your feet. Whether it’s what to charge, how to source things, business strategy - the most valuable asset is a finding a few close peers who you can confidently exchange ideas and experience with.
Q: What is the best thing that has happened to you this month?
A: I got to spend time doing videography on Bowen Island, which is such a stunning place, and the challenge of learning something new was exciting!
Q: If you could relive one day of your life, what would it be, and why?
A: My partner and I found a secret beach in Maui that felt like magic, as though time itself had suspended. I would hop back into that place in a heartbeat!
Q: What is your superpower?
A: I can stay neutral even through the most explosive moments!
If I could choose one: teleportation.
Q: What can we expect to see next from you?
A: I’m not sure specifically, who knows! That is exactly the part I enjoy the most - and causes the most anxiety. The excitement of the unknown.
