Design is in the Details

Learn more about the world of Melanie Auld as we sit down with the woman responsible for bringing our Vancouver boutique vision to life – Gillian Segal.

The inspiration, the textures and stunning stonework... Interior designer and curator Gillian Segal played an integral role in bringing our Vancouver flagship boutique from ideation to the grand opening on December 3rd, 2022. As a physical manifestation of the Melanie Auld brand, the space was designed with connection in mind; featuring natural stone textures and colours to highlight the full array of fine and demi-fine jewelry.

Look behind the scenes as we connect with Gillian, of Gillian Segal Design, on her creative process for bringing the West 4th Boutique to life.

What was your initial source of inspiration for the boutique?

Mel was definitely my muse for this project.  I've been lucky enough to work with her and Alex [Auld] on their personal residence as well, so over the last couple of years we have really been able to get to know each other. She has a very clearly defined aesthetic and vision, which makes my job way easier (and maybe at times a little harder, haha!) Unsurprisingly, Mel came to our team with a very strong vision for her store - she knows her customers very well and has their experience top of mind in all decisions she makes. She was very clear that she wanted the store to feel like a departure from normal ‘Vancouver life’ – or a shopping vacation, if you will.  Mel and I both share a love for European design and the mixture of old and new elements, so this was really the foundation for the interior design.”

What are you most excited to see come to life?

That’s like asking me to pick a favourite child! I’m excited for everything. Mostly, I’m excited because I think the overall vibe and culmination of all the design elements, textures and palette will be something fresh and different for Vancouver. Selfishly, I’m also very excited that we got Mel to go with some bold colours in the space since she usually gravitates more towards neutrals. I’m such a fan of MAJ, and as a customer myself I am excited at how the space will come to represent the brand.

How will this space combine beauty and function?

Mel was very clear with her directives on the customer experience, so I think the function of this space will transcend just having functional space planning, durable finishes and comfortable furniture.  The goal has been to create a space that feels welcoming and inclusive, but still very luxurious and design forward.

The Vancouver Boutique is now open and offering welding, piercing, and engraving experiences. If you’re looking for a small escape from your everyday, stop by to experience the details for yourself. We can’t wait to meet you, IRL!
